Manchester United are weighing up whether to make a bid for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
Ruben Amorim wants to bring in a defensive midfielder before September’s deadline, with the club having held exploratory talks for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba this month.
A deal to sign Baleba looks unviable, however, as Brighton hold out for a fee in the region of £100m for the Cameroon international.
Manchester United are now understood to be considering Wharton. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign with Crystal Palace in 2023/24, after joining from Blackburn in that season’s January transfer window. His performances earned Wharton a place in the England squad for Euro 2024.
Injuries impacted his campaign last term, though he returned to help Palace to FA Cup success.
talkSPORT are reporting that the Red Devils could launch a move to bring the Blackburn-born player back to the North West.
However, Palace are under no pressure to sell Wharton, who is contracted at Selhurst Park until 2029. The Eagles are also expected to lose Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze in the current transfer window and will be reluctant to lose another key asset.
Manchester United want to bring in a midfielder to replace Casemiro, who will turn 34 in February. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte has struggled to make an impact since his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
