Manchester United needed a last-gasp Kobbie Mainoo goal to earn themselves a thrilling 4-3 win at Wolves on Thursday, which gave Erik ten Hag’s team just their second victory in their last seven Premier League matches.

Like their hosts on Sunday, West Ham are also chasing a place in Europe this season and will be hoping to build on their 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in midweek when they head to Old Trafford, having beaten the Red Devils 2-0 at the London Stadium in December.

Can West Ham make history at Old Trafford?

Although they beat Manchester United at home earlier this season, West Ham supporters won’t be counting their chickens when it comes to bringing three points back from Old Trafford this weekend. Pretty much every record stacks up against them in that regard:

  • David Moyes has won just one of his 19 away games against Manchester United in all competitions (D4 L14).
  • London clubs have won just one of their last 19 Premier League away games against Manchester United (D3 L15), with Crystal Palace picking up a 1-0 victory earlier this season.
  • Manchester United have won their last three Premier League home games against West Ham 1-0.
  • West Ham are looking to complete their first league double over Manchester United since 2006-07.
  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League home games against West Ham (W12 D3).

That’s a lot of history to overcome, even if West Ham have current superiority in the table, sitting sixth, one place ahead of this weekend’s hosts. So, who can the Hammers turn to for inspiration? Surely, it has to be Jarrod Bowen.

The England international already has 13 direct goal involvements in the Premier League this season — the fifth-highest number in the division — with 11 goals and two assists. But it’s his away record which impresses the most.

Seven of Bowen’s 11 Premier League strikes have come away from the London Stadium so far this season, with Mike Small in 1991-92 (9) the last player to score more on the road in a top-flight campaign for the Hammers. Only Erling Haaland (8) has a better record on the road.

Unfortunately for West Ham, Bowen has only ever scored one goal against Manchester United, despite no team facing him on more occasions (12) across his career. But Bowen has been going about re-writing his own personal history since joining the Hammers, so there’s no time like the present.

Manchester United v West Ham team news

Striker Anthony Martial has been ruled out for the hosts with a groin injury while the game looks to have come too early for both Tyrell Malacia and Mason Mount.

Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Lisandro Martinez are all struggling. Sofyan Amrabat may not feature despite Morocco’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Michail Antonio (knee) and Lucas Paqueta (calf) will be missing for the Hammers, while Said Benrahma, whose potential loan move to Lyon collapsed on deadline day, is still suspended following his red card in the FA Cup defeat at Bristol City.
