Manchester United playmaker Christian Eriksen is closer to leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season than renewing his expiring contract.

The 32-year-old’s deal runs out in June 2025, with the Red Devils chiefs reluctant to offer him fresh terms.

Despite being on the wrong side of 30, Eriksen’s skills remain in high demand. Several clubs, including Ajax, are reportedly vying for his signature.

According to the Sun, the Denmark international could return to Amsterdam, where he established himself among Europe’s finest talents over a decade ago.

Eriksen’s rise to prominence at the Johan Cruyff Arena earned him an £11 million switch to Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. He became one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League.

After surviving a heart problem at the 2020 European Championship, he severed ties with Inter Milan to join Brentford on a short-term deal.

His impressive displays in London proved a springboard for his unexpected transfer to United in 2022.

But despite his unquestionable qualities, Eriksen is no longer the player who previously unlocked Premier League defences for fun.

Recurring fitness problems and Erik ten Hag’s reluctance to hand him a regular starting berth have plagued his impact this term.

Eriksen has only started three league matches in 2024/25 and has yet to score or assist.

However, he has made six goal contributions in other competitions, bagging three goals and three assists in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.

With the Red Devils desperately lacking a spark in the midfield, as witnessed by an abysmal 0.71 goal ratio, Ten Hag would be well-advised to start Eriksen in Man Utd’s next fixture against Brentford.

Although the Dane looks destined to end his relatively brief association with United, Kobbie Mainoo seems close to penning a new contract.

He is set for a bumper new deal, with the club keen to reward him for his scintillating first-team form.
