Barcelona fans have been served with a massive respite, as Manchester United have opted out of their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, reports Daily Mail.

The Dutchman had become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the transfer market in recent weeks, with speculations linking him to a move away from Camp Nou at the end of the season.

Although de Jong had no intention to leave the club, Barcelona were said to be considering the sale as it would have handed them the financial injection they needed ahead of a busy summer transfer window.

As per the report, Barcelona were holding out for a hefty €82 million price tag on de Jong as they wanted to not only recoup the €76 million they had spent on the player a few years ago but also make a slight profit.

Manchester United, though, have no intention to match such demands as new coach Erik ten Hag is currently on a tight budget and has a massive rebuilding job on his hands, with United expected to offload up to ten players at the end of the season.

The Premier League giants have informed Barcelona and de Jong’s agent of their reluctance to meet the financial demands. It essentially means their pursuit of the Dutchman could be over for good.

Manchester United are not the only suitor for Frenkie this summer, with clubs like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain also involved in the chase.

So there is hope yet for FC Barcelona, should they look to sanction the sale of the former Ajax starlet and inject a financial boost that could go a long way in helping them land their top targets, including Robert Lewandowski, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Xavi Hernandez, though, will be reluctant of letting de Jong leave the club. The Barça coach rates the player very highly and views him as a vital cog in the club’s future success.
