Manchester United’s U21s fixture against Leicester City has been postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Mark Dempsey’s side were set to welcome Leicester City to Leigh Sports Village in the Premier League 2 on Friday night, but it has now been decided that the match will be rescheduled, like the Premier League this weekend.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the death of the Queen on Thursday – but United’s Europa League against Real Sociedad went ahead as UEFA deemed it too late to postpone the fixture.

The statement read: “The Queen died peacefully a Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

It is also understood that no sporting body is under obligation to postpone fixtures in the wake of the Queen’s death, although they have been asked to reschedule any events that are scheduled to take place on the date of the state funeral (no date has been confirmed yet).

We await updates from the Premier League on potential postponements ahead of next weekend’s fixtures.

Wrong decision from Premier League to postpone games?

Of course, this is meant in no way disrespectful to the late Queen, but Manchester Evening News reporter Liam Corless says he has not spoken to a single fan who agrees with the postponements.

He labeled it the wrong decision from the Premier League.
