It is an open secret that Manchester United need more attacking reinforcements, particularly at the tip of the attack.

Erik ten Hag himself has admitted they would like to sign a striker in the summer and with Anthony Martial’s departure recently reported, the need becomes urgent.

Reportedly, even before that happened, United did try to address this problem position.

Despite the club pleading poverty and restriction due to Profit and Sustainability rules, German outlet BILD reports that they tried to swoop for Serhou Guirassy in January.

Guirassy was one of the few players who was available on a bargain deal, certainly with respect to his output.

He reportedly had a release clause of around £15 million in January and BILD says United tried to go in for him but it didn’t work out.

Guirassy is one of Europe’s hottest striking commodities who has scored 25 goals in 23 league games.

At 28, he is at the peak of his career and Europe’s elites are certain to return for him in the summer with gusto as his price tag will be around £20 million.

United are also expected to be one of those teams so their early attempt at the player might be more indicative of them expressing their appreciation.

Ten Hag revealed after the window ended that their financial situation didn’t allow them to act even though they wanted to move for a striker.

This report confirms that Guirassy was that player, or certainly was among the names being considered at the time.

Therefore, their early January attempt, even though unsuccessful, would have undoubtedly gone a long way towards convincing the player how admired he is at Old Trafford.

In a bidding war that is expected to include many teams in the summer with tougher competition, that January expression of interest might just tilt Guirassy to the Red Devils.
