Manchester United have been told Gary Neville is the man to “save” the club as their next manager.

Ruben Amorim is the sixth permanent boss at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013 and he has been unable to spark a swift turnaround in the club’s fortunes.

Defeat to Brighton in their last Premier League match has left United 13th in the Premier League table, having lost 10 of their 22 league matches this season.

Amorim has labelled this side the worst in United’s history and it is a verdict that former Match of the Day host Des Lynam agrees with.

In his latest Telegraph column, Lynam made the shock suggestion that United should appoint Neville as their manager. The former right-back’s only previous managerial experience was an unsuccessful spell at Valencia.

Lynam wrote: “A few years ago I suggested that the only man who could steer United back to their former glory was their one-time captain Gary Neville.

“I put it to him and while I touched something of a nerve, Gary made it clear that his business interests and his punditry for Sky would take precedence over any thought of engaging in football management again.

“But here goes – Neville would still be the best man for the job. He has Manchester United blood running through his veins. He is deeply hurt by the club’s present predicament. He has a powerful personality and would be a strong presence in the dressing room. Oh and the money men had better watch out, Neville is an astute businessman.”

While Neville has made it clear he has no desire to return to management after his time at Valencia, Lynam believes he would be “forever remembered” if he could lead United back to the top of the English game.

“My plea to him was over three years ago but as the men with their furrowed brows took their temporary residence in the United dugout, Neville has remained the best candidate, in my mind,” Neville said.

“He is hugely successful as a broadcaster but then almost every Tom, Dick and Rio has had a go at that.

“Apparently Neville has made a great deal of money from his business exploits but will he be remembered for them? If he were to save Manchester United, he would be forever remembered.”
