Manchester United will have to sell Pogba or Lingard to balance the books

According to Daily Mail, Manchester United face the prospect of having to sell off Paul Pogba or Jesse Lingard. United are eyeing a max net spent of £100m for the transfer window. With two sizable expenditures in Sancho and Varane, they are looking at potential sales in the form of Pogba or Lingard.

Lingard’s loan spell at West Ham was a hugely successful one. At one point it looked as if the 28-year-old would single-handedly carry West Ham to the top four places. While they did fall short in the end, Europa League qualification was still ensured as Lingard capped off one of his best-ever seasons. Following that, he has now returned to United.

The problem is that he is in the last year of his current deal at the club and there’s not been much of an indication that he will renew it. This is not the headache Manchester United or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have wanted with Paul Pogba. He was one of United’s standout players last season and impressed with France in the Euros as well.

As United close in on their second big signing in the form of Varane, their combined outlay this season would amount to £115m. United still want two more signings but that will depend on the sale of either Pogba for £50m or Lingard for £30m. That will help them balance their spending and keep the net spend to a respectable £75m-£100m.

So far, United have not had any significant outgoings but that will be necessary if they are to bring in more players without burning their pockets. United would obviously not want to lose any good players but they will need to sanction one big sale to keep their books balanced.
