Manchester United have brought in two of Erik ten Hag’s former charges in Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, with all three having shot to fame together. Now the Red Devils will try for a fourth member of the band.
That player is long-term target Frenkie de Jong, as per Sport. United reportedly enquired about de Jong last week, who is still nursing an ankle injury from April, and the Catalan daily say that Barcelona would be open to offers for United, but want at least €60m for the Dutch midfielder.
De Jong is one of Barcelona’s highest earners this summer due in part to his ascending contract and deferred wages, with his gross salary rumoured to be over €30m this season. Hence the Catalan giants are keen to get him off their wage will.
The Dutchman has two years left on his deal, and has shown no sign of interest in signing a new one so far, so Barcelona might be thinking that now is a good time to sell him. Nevertheless, just as the 27-year-old has shown little desire to sign a new deal, neither has he been open to leaving the club at the time of writing.
