Manchester United have reached out to Paul Pogba’s representatives to discuss a new contract, as per Sky Sports.

The 28-year old midfielder is approaching the end of his deal with the Red Devils and will be allowed to negotiate with clubs abroad from January onwards.

United had to decide whether they want to cash in on him in this transfer window or hand him a new contract.

Given his significant importance in the squad, it appears that the club has selected the latter option.

The Frenchman has blown hot and cold since making his return to Old Trafford from Juventus in 2016.

Pogba has been guilty of putting on some lacklustre performances, but he has also single-handedly changed the course of a few vital games.

Arguably, his best performance came against Manchester City, when the Red Devils battled back from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2.

Over the last few transfer windows, European giants like Juventus, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have been linked with Pogba.

However, with only one year left in his contract, none of these teams has shown interest in signing him this summer.

Due to the negative financial effects of COVID-19, the clubs are facing a huge liquidity crunch.

This makes it tough for them to table a substantial offer for the Frenchman.

Binding him to a new contract will help United stabilise his future ahead of a big season.

Deploying him on the left flank last term helped Pogba concentrate more on the attacking side of the game.

If Solskjaer wants his team to challenge for silverware, it is important to hold onto the Frenchman.
