Manchester United have missed out on a number of key targets to their Premier League rivals this summer.
Heading into the summer transfer window, United saw Liam Delap as their “priority” target for the striker position. However, the Ipswich Town talisman left Jason Wilcox surprised by picking Chelsea as his next club.
Despite enjoying a transformative spell under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, Viktor Gyokeres decided to join Arsenal. United also made a late attempt to “hijack” Liverpool’s move for Hugo Ekitike, but the Frenchman was already set on Anfield.
Now, Manchester City have struck an agreement to sign a player who was on United’s shortlist for the goalkeeping department.
In May, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Red Devils could look to sign James Trafford to possibly replace Andre Onana, who frustrated many with his erratic shot-stopping last season.
Meanwhile, Trafford has earned plaudits for his sharp reflexes and composure. He kept an incredible 29 clean sheets in the Championship last campaign, helping Burnley record an incredible 100 points.
However, City have now acted swiftly to beat United and Newcastle United to the signature of the 22-year-old talent.
According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal is in place between City and Burnley, who have agreed to part ways with the Englishman “under value of £40m buy back clause.” The Sky Blues are expected to pay a £27m fee to the newly-promoted side.
Trafford has also agreed to return to his former club, as Pep Guardiola is keen to have him in his squad. He will undergo medical tests early next week.
Earlier today, the Italian journalist shed light on United’s goalkeeping hunt as well.
Romano has revealed that United approached Aston Villa to explore the possibility of signing Emiliano Martínez on loan. However, Villa rejected their proposal.
Figures at United are “deciding internationally with experienced GK and young GK as options.” The Old Trafford outfit are understood to be monitoring Belgian youngster Senne Lammens.
It has been reported earlier that the Royal Antwerp has given the “green light” to a move to United.
