In his post-match interview after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, Ralf Rangnick stated that Anthony Martial had refused the opportunity to be included in the matchday squad that travelled to Villa Park.

With the absence of crucial stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford, United had to go into the game with eight substitutes (nine allowed), including two goalkeepers, Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton.

“He [Martial] didn’t want to be in the squad,” Rangnick said.

“He would have been in the squad normally. He didn’t want to be and that’s the reason why he wasn’t with us.”

In response to the manager’s claims, the Frenchman posted a story on Instagram later that evening which read as follows.

“I will never refuse to play a match for Man United.”

“I’ve been here for seven years and I never disrespected, and will never disrespect, the club and the fans.”

The snappy comeback has sent the entire fanbase into a meltdown, with people wondering how deep-rooted these issues of toxicity and narcissism are in the Manchester United dressing room.

If it’s Martial trying to deceive the fans, I’m surprised at his audacity to call out the manager on social media after years of dropping disastrous performances on the pitch. He is being paid £250,000 per week to do absolutely nothing; the last thing we expect from him is not to go around disclosing the dressing room affairs on social media.

The France international’s future at Old Trafford has been up in the air for quite some time, and the news that he wants to move elsewhere for more playing time is not new. In fact, his agent Philippe Lamboley told Sky Sports News a month ago that the player wishes to leave the club in January.

“Anthony wishes to leave the club in January. He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.”

It’s pretty evident that he is unhappy with his lack of game-time in recent months, but things haven’t been working in favour of Donny van de Beek and Dean Henderson either, yet they decide to act like absolute professionals on and off the pitch.

No wonder the club is suffering from mentality problems. Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t the issue, neither is David de Gea – the problem is the management’s inability to get rid of figures like Martial, who seem riddled with self-centeredness.

But instead, if it’s Rangnick making up lies, can you imagine how bad things have to be for a manager as experienced as him to throw players under the bus without any second thought?
