Manchester United send Paul Pogba warning over new long-term contract | OneFootball

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward are reportedly in agreement over the contract situation of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

According to ESPN, United would like to extend Pogba’s stay at Old Trafford by offering him a new long-term contract, but only with a reasonable offer rather than a bumper pay rise.

United finally managed to get Alexis Sanchez off the books permanently this summer and ESPN note that Solskjaer and Woodward both the share the view that their current wage structure should not be broken again, under any terms.

The shambolic Sanchez transfer has been rather symbolic of the lack of planning that has led to United’s failures in the post Sir Alex Ferguson era.

ESPN claims Sanchez was earning £400,000 per-week before bonuses and the club ended up saving £40m in wages by sanctioning his move to Inter Milan.

Pogba, meanwhile, is said to earn £270,000 per-week and would expect a pay rise should he sign a new deal to stay.

But United will refuse to bow down to extortionate demands Pogba could make to avoid another Sanchez-esque situation.

United recently activated the extension in Pogba’s contract that keeps him at the club until the summer of 2022.

But before the Reds commit huge wages to a new deal, the World Cup winner has to prove he can become a consistent performer in Solskjaer’s squad, which he has failed to do so far since the Norwegian took over.

Pogba was a substitute in recent victories over Newcastle and Paris Saint-Germain after a lethargic start to the season but could return to the starting XI for United’s game against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
