Newcastle United have reportedly failed in their bid to sign Jesse Lingard on loan this month.

News emerged on Wednesday that the Magpies were serious about moving for the Manchester United midfielder, who was heavily linked with the Premier League club following their Saudi-led takeover.

The Telegraph claimed in October that Lingard could be one of Newcastle’s first signings under their new owners, however, the Manchester Evening News brought us all a fresh update yesterday. It noted that Newcastle are willing to cover Lingard’s £100,000-a-week wages for the rest of his United contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Then, it seemed like a move could happen after Sky Sports stated that the 29-year-old was impressed by Newcastle signing his friend Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for just £12 million. The MEN also noted that Lingard’s preference is to move back to London, where he spent the second half of last season, at West Ham.

But, apparently, United have turned down Newcastle’s approach to sign Lingard on loan.

According to BBC Sport, United are reluctant to loan out the midfielder due to his contract expiring in the summer, even though Newcastle are willing to cover his wages.

It sounds like they want a permanent offer or nothing.

Newcastle were terrible in the final third against Watford at the weekend, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Eddie Howe made Lingard a priority this month or in the summer.

Moreover, part of me feels that none of the Premier League clubs want to do any business with Newcastle following their takeover. And that is something I would support.
