Manchester United have been continuously linked with a move for Netherlands midfielder Xavi Simons this summer.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder spent the 2022/23 season at Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven under the management of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has recently joined Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff, before returning to the French giants.

Simons joined RB Leipzig on loan last season and established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s best players.

All of this means Manuel Ugarte isn’t the only PSG midfielder on United’s radar this summer.

United have even been linked with a loan move involving a £70m obligation for Simons.

Simons to United this summer?

According to French publication L’Equipe, United are pursuing a move for Simons, but there is an understanding that Bayern Munich and Leipzig are leading the race to sign the Barcelona academy product.

The report claims United are working on a deal to bring Simons to Old Trafford for over a year. Last year, PSG allegedly rejected a €50m bid for the player and they are now expecting a bidding war for his signature.

Interestingly, reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano recently said that a deal to take Simons to United would take overcoming several hurdles.

“Xavi Simons continues to be linked with Manchester United and it’s something realistic because there has long been plenty of interest from him around Europe, including in England,” Romano noted in his Daily Briefing column.

“However, I’ve been checking with my sources and they’re still saying the same thing – that Simons is most likely to continue in Germany next season… I don’t expect this to be a long saga that drags into August because Simons wants to decide soon, but for now it’s between Bayern and Leipzig, and Man United are not in advanced talks over Simons.”
