Manchester United are preparing to sign Villareal defender Pau Torres. Torres’ release clause is around €50m but clubs could expect to sign him for a lower fee. [source: Todofichajes]

The report also mentions that following the complications regarding Dayot Upamecano’s release clause, Torres is a favourable choice for the Red Devils. Both Juan Mata and David de Gea could act as intermediaries to convince the fellow Spaniard.

The report further adds that Arsenal and Real Madrid are also in contention to attain Torres’ services.

Torres is a product of Villareal’s youth academy. He broke through the first team because of his brilliant loan spell at Malaga in Spain’s second division. The 23-year-old cemented a starting birth making 33 starts last season. He also earned a contract extension until 2024.

This season, he has made 10 appearances for Villareal playing every minute in the league.

Our take

United are in a dire need of a centre-back. Solskjaer’s only reliable options are Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. Both Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly are injury concerns. Phil Jones and Marco Rojo are not in the club’s future plans. The only option left is Teden Mengi who’s too inexperienced to be relied on.

Harry Maguire needs a reliable partner who is quick. Upamecano is quicker and covers more ground than Torres. However, Torres’ left-footedness would bring more balance to United’s defense.

Both Torres and Upamecano are good options with a long-term future at the club and potential for development.
