Manchester United's return to action after the March international break has not gone well. They lost to Nottingham Forest away before drawing with their rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford. Now, they shift focus to the UEFA Europa League as they travel to France to take on Ligue 1 side Lyon in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Despite creating few chances, Rúben Amorim’s side failed to open the scoring in the Manchester derby. With winning the Europa League now their only realistic route to qualify for next season’s Champions League, Amorim will be keen to take something positive from the first leg before the reverse fixture at Old Trafford next week.
A lot of eyes will be on the Cameroon international after the recent war of words involving former Manchester United player Nemanja Matić. He will be keen to have a successful night.
The Moroccan had a good game at Old Trafford in their previous match. He will be hoping to continue his solid form in Lyon for the first leg.
Maguire did well to stop Manchester City’s attack last time out. Against Lyon, he will be hoping to put in a similar performance.
The French international did well to fend off Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden at Old Trafford on Sunday. His experience playing against Lyon in previous seasons could come in handy.
The Portuguese international will be expecting his teammates to do better with the crosses he provides on Thursday. A regular in the side, he’ll look to make an impact.
The Brazilian has looked like a rejuvenated player in recent matches despite the results. He should retain his place in the team.
The former Paris Saint-Germain player is expected to start. He did well getting into the box to support the attack in the Manchester Derby, and he’ll be keen to build on that performance.
The Dutch full-back tried to get forward often against Manchester City, but was not particularly successful. His insistence on getting the ball onto his favored foot spoiled a golden chance. With Luke Shaw back in the squad, he’ll need to step up.
The captain remains United’s main threat going forward. His ability to control the tempo will be crucial if Rúben Amorim’s side is to get something from this match.
The Argentine was very lively against their local rivals in the last match. However, he will need to be more clinical in front of goal this time.
Højlund, who started against Manchester City at the weekend, had a match to forget. That could open the door for Zirkzee, who looked decent after coming on, to get the start in Lyon.
