Manchester United plotting “late swoop” for Joan Garcia, poised to “hold talks” imminently

Manchester United are reportedly planning to make a serious move for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Garcia has emerged as one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the transfer market on the back of an incredible season at Espanyol. Known for his quick reactions and calming presence between the sticks, the 24-year-old kept eight clean sheets in 38 La Liga appearances this season.

He has been strongly linked with Arsenal but the North Londoners are unlikely to be able to offer him a guaranteed starting spot next campaign.

According to CaughtOffside, United are keen to make a change in goal, as Andre Onana has proven to be a liability at Old Trafford.

His poor positioning, lack of concentration, and underwhelming handling of the ball led to United conceding several avoidable goals across the season, including in the Europa League final in Bilbao.

It is claimed the Spaniard seems to be a “serious option” for United, with the club’s hierarchy hoping to “hold talks in the next few days” over a possible summer transfer.

Garcia’s contract in Catalonia expires in the summer of 2028 but he is available at a reasonable fee of €25million, the value of his release clause at RCDE Stadium.

Barcelona are viewed as the favourites for his signature, but it is underlined that Garcia is yet to give a final green light to any suitor.

The report claims that United “sense an opportunity to swoop late on” and they “seem to be doing most to advance their interest” at the moment.

For €25m, Garcia could prove to be an absolute bargain, especially as United spent around €50m to sign Onana from Inter in 2023.

Considering the Cameroon international’s situation under Ruben Amorim, the Mancunians may be Garcia’s only top suitor capable of offering him the first-choice role from the get-go.

Amorim recently dropped Onana from his matchday squad amid suggestions United are looking to move him to the Saudi Pro League.
