United wasted a number of chances through the likes of Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford but took the lead with seven minutes to go when Alejandro Garnacho tucked into the corner with precision.

City responded and equalised in the 89th minute when Oscar Bobb’s hoicked cross was headed past Andre Onana by substitute Bernardo Silva.

But then came a marathon shootout in which City had the beating of United, with Manuel Akanji firing home the winning spot-kick after Jonny Evans had scraped horribly over the bar.

Dom Smith was at Wembley to rate the Man Utd players’ performances...

Andre Onana 6

Had very little to do and could not keep out Bernardo Silva’s planted header but responded by saving Silva’s penalty in the shootout. Didn’t get near any of the others.

Diogo Dalot 8

Shepherded Jeremy Doku well, not allowing the slippery Belgian to wriggle away from him on too many occasions. Put in a couple of important lunging tackles too. Remains an important player. Scored his penalty.

Harry Maguire 6

A composed head at the back, playing one wonderful long ball right into the path of Marcus Rashford at one point in the first half.

Jonny Evans 6

Good display from the Northern Irishman, who stuck to his task defensively and looked to play the ball into midfield. But then a nightmare moment for the veteran, whose penalty in the shootout was limp, flew over the bar, and allowed City to prevail.

Lisandro Martinez 6

Played out of position at left-back. One misplaced sideways pass to Evans spelt trouble, and James McAtee almost capitalised but struck the post. Made an excellent tackle in the second half. Good penalty.

Casemiro 6

Lost the ball in costly positions at moments, but going forward his passes were key to unlocking Amad Diallo and Marcus Rashford out wide.

Kobbie Mainoo 7

Spent all afternoon nibbling at the feet of City players and intercepting. Once he’d won the ball, he would invariably find the right pass. Really good display.

Struggled to make an impact, with United’s deeper midfielders and wide men seeing more of the ball than Mount.

Amad Diallo 7

A bright display from a winger who seems to be in a really good moment right now. Almost scored before the interval.

Bruno Fernandes 7

Unfortunate to see his second-half stunner disallowed for offside. A typically workmanlike display from Fernandes, who never shirks defensive responsibilities. Rolled home his penalty.

Marcus Rashford 6

Showed glimpses of his blistering best with a couple of beelines for the byline, but Manuel Akanji and Rico Lewis kept tight to him.

Subs:

Scott McTominay (Mount, 58’) 5

A quiet cameo. Should have tucked home when Rashford headed towards goal from a corner. Scored his penalty nicely.

Facundo Pellistri (Evans, 58’) 5

Played at right-back. Stuck to the task well but rarely saw the ball.

Alejandro Garnacho (Diallo, 59’) 8

One nice run at the City defence, but he looked unsure what to do with it. Then scored what he thought would be the winning, firing into the corner with precision. Slammed home in the shootout.

Toby Collyer (Maguire, 59’) 6

Very composed performance from the youngster.

Jadon Sancho (Rashford, 83’) N/A

More penalty disappointment at Wembley for Sancho, whose spot-kick was tipped against the post by Ederson.

Not used: Bayindir, Antony, Eriksen, Zirkzee
