Manchester United planning Old Trafford overhaul, capacity could rise to over 80,000 | OneFootball

Manchester United are in discussions to overhaul Old Trafford in a major development, according to reports. Old Trafford remains the biggest club stadium in England, with the current capacity capped at just over 74,000.

The stadium, which has been deprived of regular maintenance since the Glazer family purchased the club in 2005, could now be set to be refurbished as the club seeks to expand to a full capacity of over 80,000.

The Sir Bobby Charlton stand is now expected to be expanded, with a ‘significant improvement’ set to be made, according to the BBC. According to the report, initial talks have taken place between the club and a number of interested parties regarding the plans.

There are, however, some issues that come with the potential redevelopment of the stand. The Sir Bobby Charlton stand sits near a railway line and talks have centred around the impact of nearby housing.

An upgrade to the stand would also see an enhancement to media and broadcast facilities and hospitality areas but no timescale has been set on the project yet.

Old Trafford has been scarce of care in recent years and the club has been embarrassed by the ancient state of the legendary ground. The leaking roof at Old Trafford has yet to be addressed whilst a broken door, damaged during the Super League protests in April, took weeks to fix despite the owners promising consistent investments.

Modernising Old Trafford is something that should’ve happened years ago but the news will be welcomed by Manchester United supporters.
