Manchester United are set to activate clauses in the contracts of Juan Mata, Ashley Young, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind.

According to the Telegraph, the four players’ current deals are set to end in the summer, but the club will take up options to keep them all for an extra year.

There has been no new long-term deal for the likes of Herrera despite negotiations, and the quartet would be allowed to speak to foreign clubs in January about a free switch when the season ends.

In order to avoid that, United are prepared to activate the clauses.

Talks over a new deal for Herrera have dragged on as the midfielder has fallen down the Old Trafford pecking order. There are also long-term issues with Juan Mata, who is no longer first choice before the club has even pursued an interest in signing Arsenal’s Mesut Özil.

A clause has already been activated in Luke Shaw’s contract but it is to strengthen United’s negotiation position, rather than to keep the defender.

Shaw has been out of favour under José Mourinho and the club are now open to selling him, with the aim of recouping as much of the £28m fee he cost back in 2014 as possible.

Reports suggest Shaw could be sold for around £20m.
