Manchester United offered chance to sign Newcastle reject on free transfer

Manchester United’s biggest cause of concern during the 2024/25 season was their striker position.

Rasmus Hojlund’s form regressed as the season progressed and Joshua Zirkzee struggled to find his feet in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford. In fact, in the second half of the season, the Dutchman looked more potent as a wide playmaker than a number nine.

Ruben Amorim, however, is looking to sign two wide playmakers this summer. Matheus Cunha has already been announced as a new Red Devil and United remain locked in talks with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo.

As such, United are heading into the pre-season tour with no new striker in sight.

Manchester United exploring the market for a new striker

According to The Athletic, the signing of a new centre-forward “remains a possibility if United are able to clear space within the squad.”

It is claimed United have been “keeping tabs” on Fiorentina star Moise Kean.

However, the Italy international’s contract includes a hefty €52m release clause. Further, the Premier League giants face competition from the Saudi Pro League for his signature.

United also admire Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins but the England international is likely to cost more than Kean. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Mancunians could make a move for Watkins “in the event that Rasmus Hojlund leaves the club.”

Manchester United offered Callum Wilson

United’s financial predicament is no secret. As such, agents are aware that Ineos may consider the prospect of signing a stop-gap solution in a cut-price deal to add much-needed firepower to their attack.

The report claims United have been “offered the chance to sign several free agents, namely Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jamie Vardy and Callum Wilson.”

The 33-year-old struggled to challenge Alexander Isak for the starting spot at Newcastle United, scoring zero goals in 18 Premier League appearances last term.

It is added that United would “only advance on these, if at all, towards the end of the window if they do not get any of their top targets.”
