Raimond van der Gouw has compared Manchester United’s new signing Lisandro Martinez to club legend Roy Keane, who the Dutchman shared a dressing with at Old Trafford.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper played with Keane, serving as a back-up option to Peter Schmeichel for a several years. He believes a player like Martinez can have a positive effect on a dressing room.

After meeting Martinez at Carrington training ground, Van der Gouw noticed similarities and told the club’s official website: “It just crossed my mind now. [He’s] a player like Roy Keane. You like to have him in your team and not against you!

“I think I felt a little bit sorry in the beginning when they put the spotlight on him because he was making a few mistakes,” he added.

“I thought he was really good. I said to him that I hated him when he was in Holland because I was the goalkeeping coach of PSV Eindhoven!

“I said to him: I hated you because you were good and was doing such a good job for Ajax! Now I love to see him play for United and he is the kind of player who will never let you down. With his character, he always wants to work, wants to fight and wants to win, and that’s typical of United. So I think he’s in the right place and at the right club.”

Van der Gouw has been at Carrington to train ahead of this weekend’s Legends match against Liverpool.

Martinez has had a huge impact since joining United. That much cannot be denied but I fear for any periods we witness this season when the Argentine or Raphael Varane pick up an injury. Together they’re the formidable package and our full-backs are improving.

The Argentina international was signed instead of Villarreal defender Pau Torres and I don’t think you will hear any United fans complain about that in hindsight.
