Liverpool are close on our heels at $4.1bn. It is fair to observe that the gap between both clubs, once a chasm, is now quite close. The Merseysiders have had an 88% rise in the last two years thanks to their on-field success.

At the same time, United have experienced a 10% change in their value. Alarmingly, only Atletico Madrid have a lower variation than us amongst the top 15 teams on the list.

The Red Devils were third on the list last year but have now been overtaken by Bayern Munich. Barcelona tops the list while Real Madrid comes in at a close second. United have also come fourth in revenue earned, with an impressive $643m.

The other English teams in the top ten are Manchester City ($4bn) in sixth spot, Chelsea ($3.2bn) in seventh spot, Arsenal ($2.8bn) in ninth and Tottenham Hotspur ($2.3bn) in tenth.

French Champions PSG saw the highest variation with a 129% rise in their valuation. This has seen them replace Juventus from the top ten list.

The likes of Everton ($658m), West Ham United ($508m) and Leicester ($455) complete the list of English clubs in the top 20. It is Leicester’s first time in illustrious company.

While it is good to see the club top tables off the pitch, the onus should be to do the same on it as well. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may well believe trophies to be objects of ego. However as Liverpool and PSG have shown, success off the pitch follows the one on it.
