The deadline to feature in this coming weekend matches was midday on Friday, and the club are understood to have not signed off the deal before the clock struck 12.

United reportedly believe that it was always a stretch for Ugarte to play minutes as he had a disrupted pre-season due to Uruguay’s Copa America run.

Ugarte has completed a medical and will be confirmed as a United player on Deadline Day after a deal was finally agreed with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Uruguayan was previously expected to join on loan but will now move for an initial £42million plus £8m in add-ons, according to multiple reports. The deal also represents an £8m climbdown from PSG’s original demand.

Erik ten Hag has made a defensive midfielder one of his key priorities this summer, alongside a new striker and defensive reinforcements.

Ugarte will join Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui as fifth major signing of the summer.

Leaving Manchester at the same time will be Scott McTominay, who is joining Napoli for around £25million.
