Manchester United midfielder Emma Watson has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and will miss the 2023/2024 season.

The Red Devils confirmed the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

It has been reported that Watson has sustained the injury whilst on international duty with Scotland. The player was selected by Scotland head coach Pedro Martínez Losa for this month’s UEFA Women’s Nations League double-header against England and Belgium but Watson was absent from the matchday squad for both games. The reason for Watson’s absence has now been confirmed and it is bad news for the player, her club and her country.

Watson only joined last season’s Barclays Women’s Super League runners-up Manchester United in August after leaving former club Rangers. The teenager is one of the brightest young talents to come from north of the border and Manchester United fans were excited to see how Watson would perform in the English game. Fans of The Red Devils will now have to wait until next season to get a glimpse of their new signing in action.

Manchester United kick-off the 2023/2024 Barclays Women’s Super League season with a fixture against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
