As we approach the final few days of the January transfer window, several clubs across Europe have upped the ante as they look to sign a few players before the transfer market slams shut.

Among the clubs looking to reinforce their ranks in the coming days are Manchester United. And it appears their head coach Erik ten Hag has already sent out a message to the board, urging the club to strike on any opportunity.

“In the coming days if we had the opportunity I would go for it but that’s not also up to me. That’s also clear,” ten Hag in a recent press interaction, as relayed by Manchester Evening News.

According to the report, Ten Hag has listed a number of targets in the market so far, one of which is Barcelona superstar Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman is said to be open to rekindling the pursuit of the Barcelona superstar after failing to sign him in the summer even though they had an agreement with the Catalans.

De Jong has become a crucial component in the Barcelona midfield, emerging as one of the club’s top performers this season. His role in the team could only increase as Sergio Busquets is likely to depart Camp Nou at the end of the season.

Xavi Hernandez has considered the possibility of shifting de Jong into a number six role. And, while ten Hag and Manchester United continue to admire the former Ajax starlet, there is little to no chance that Barça will consider parting ways with him now or in the summer.

Xavi and club president Joan Laporta have made it clear that they see the Netherlands international is a key cog in the team. It has been reported that the 25-year-old is one of the manager’s untouchables.

So, while ten Hag might harbour hopes of a reunion with his former protege, it is unlikely to materialise anytime soon.
