Manchester United are preparing a surprise £50m bid for Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn.
That’s according to The Sun, who claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the Scotland international would make an excellent addition to United’s midfield.
McGinn moved to Villa from Hibernian for just £2.75m 12 months ago and was instrumental in the club’s promotion back to the Premier League, scooping the Player of the Year award last month.
He netted in play-off final victory over Derby at Wembley and his stunning volley against Sheffield Wednesday was also named the 2018/19 Championship Goal of the Season.
Understandably, Villa are in no mood to lose one of their best players this summer and the Midlands outfit are reportedly hoping to tie him down to a new long-term contract.
But McGinn fits the profile of young, hungry players Solskjaer is trying to bring to Old Trafford this summer and after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s arrival, it isn’t unthinkable that they would be willing to spend another £50m on the Scot.
A leaked e-mail reportedly sent by United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward just 10 minutes before the Wan-Bissaka signing was announced appears to have offered an insight into the club’s summer transfer strategy.
“Despite the inflated nature of the transfer market, the recruitment team — in conjunction with the manager — are working calmly behind the scenes to bring in other exciting players that fit their long-term vision for the club,” read Woodward’s e-mail.
