Wayne Rooney shines on Old Trafford return to light up star-studded friendly
Celtic are celebrating victory over Manchester United in a star-studded legends charity match held at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. The Scottish giants held their nerve in a thrilling penalty shootout, with Lukasz Zaluska making a crucial save from Danny Webber before Darren O’Dea slotted home the winning spot-kick in a 5-4 triumph for the Hoops.
Penalties were needed after a competitive 1-1 draw that saw Wayne Rooney grab the headlines on his first return to the Theatre of Dreams since Soccer Aid in 2021. United’s all-time leading goalscorer rolled back the years with a stunning free-kick to give a team managed by Bryan Robson and Andy Cole a deserved first-half lead, which was eventually cancelled out by Gary Hooper after Stiliyan Petrov had hit the crossbar with an audacious strike.
The late introduction of Paul Scholes failed to produce a winner for United - who also had the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Carrick, Denis Irwin and Nicky Butt in their ranks - on a day when plenty of money was raised for the brilliant work of the Manchester United Foundation.
