Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is reportedly close to accepting a coaching role at Sporting CP.

Schmeichel made 338 appearances in a decorated spell at Old Trafford before leaving to join Sporting in 1999.

The Dane hasn’t had any coaching experience since hanging up his gloves in 2003 but according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, a deal is “very close” to take the 54-year-old back to Lisbon.

Schmeichel – whose son Kasper is a Premier League winner with Leicester City – played 66 times for the Leões between 1999 and 2001 and his former manager Augusto Inácio – now a director at the Estádio José Alvalade – is said to have been instrumental in negotiations to bring him back to the club.

A 1992 European Championship winner with Denmark, Schmeichel won five Premier League titles with United, three FA Cups, one League Cup and the Champions League.

He also won the 1999/2000 Primeira Liga title with Sporting, before leaving to join Aston Villa and then Manchester City, where he finished his career.

And he could well be coaching Joe Hart next season, who has been linked with a summer switch to Sporting following an unsuccessful spell on loan at West Ham.
