The powers that be at Premier League giants Manchester United met news of Xavi’s decision to stay put at Barcelona for next season with widespread disappointment.
That’s according to Relevo, who have today provided an insight into the situation.
The subject of Xavi’s future has of course dominated the headlines in Spain over the course of the last 24 hours.
As much comes after the 44-year-old, following a lengthy meeting with Joan Laporta and Deco, opted to reverse his decision to depart Barcelona in the summer.
If the latest word stemming from the media on Friday is anything to go by, however, then news of Xavi’s call did not only prove significant when it comes to the short-terms plans of the Blaugrana.
In addition, it has hit home at one of the heavyweights of English football.
As per the aforementioned Relevo, Manchester United were keeping a keenly close eye on the situation in the dugout in Catalunya’s capital this week.
This comes with the Red Devils having identified Xavi as a managerial target, with a view to next season.
The widespread expectation, it is claimed, is that Erik ten Hag will be relieved of his duties on the bench at Old Trafford over the coming months.
And Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team ‘saw in Xavi a young coach, a legend known throughout the world, with broad shoulders after having led Barça and with the capacity to take on a major project’.
Upon learning of the Spaniard’s decision to remain in his home country, the United board, in turn, were left ‘disappointed’.
