Earlier this week, it emerged that Mason Mount had been identified as one of Erik ten Hag’s prime midfield targets this summer as the Englishman enters the final 12 months of his contract.

Mount had previously been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp’s men’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League could have hurt their chances.

Now, the 24-year-old is reportedly one of the players Ten Hag is keen on adding to his squad and Chelsea have now named their asking price.

That’s according to the Independent, who say that Chelsea are insistent on receiving at least £55m to facilitate Mount’s sale despite the player being out of contract at the end of next season.

As per the report, Mount is keen on joining the Old Trafford club and as things stand, an agreement between the clubs is the only thing holding a move back.

Furthermore, it’s claimed that Mount views a move to United and joining Ten Hag’s side as the best fit for him as a player. It is, however, stated that United are currently not willing to meet Chelsea’s steep asking price.

That stance is subject to change depending on whether the club is sold by the Glazer family this season, with the reports also claiming that the belief is still that a deal should get over the line.

SN’s verdict… Christian Eriksen’s arrival last summer was met by similar criticism of United’s interest in Mount but the Danish star was earmarked to fill a certain role and played it to perfection in his maiden campaign.

Ten Hag is unlikely to sign a player without a purpose and if he views Mount as a good addition, he should be backed to bring the player in.
