Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo next year.

According to Calciomercato, there is huge interest from the Premier League after seeing Leeds United come close to signing the Netherlands international in the summer.

Leeds will be kicking themselves for not getting a deal done before the deadline because Gakpo has continued his form this season into the World Cup.

After an often lethargic display, the Dutch scored two late goals to probably guarantee their spot in the knockout stages. Gakpo scored late on to open the scoring for Louis van Gaal’s side with a terrific header following a sublime cross from fellow Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch pair linked up perfectly for a goal the Netherlands desperately needed at the time.

Another goal from Davy Klaassen followed in stoppage time as Van Gaal secured his first win at the World Cup, beating Senegal 2-0.

Gakpo will be happy he waited for a big move — and turning down Leeds — if his prominence continues to rise at the World Cup. He plays on the left but, as shown for the goal yesterday, he can also drift centrally as a lethal finishing weapon.

United will be in the market for forward players with Cristiano Ronaldo likely to leave the club in January.
