Transfer News: Manchester United target Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez amidst Chelsea interest

According to TEAMtalk (h/t ESPN), Manchester United have identified Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez as a transfer target amidst interest from Chelsea. He has been sensational in the Jupiler Pro League and could be in line to make the jump to the top, having attracted attention from major European clubs.

The Blues are in desperate need of additions in the left-hand side of the defence following an injury to Ben Chilwell. However, Gomez is unlikely to move out in the January transfer window, with Man United also keeping tabs on his current progression. The defender is bound to turn more heads in the future if he keeps developing on this trajectory.

Primarily a left-back, the 21-year-old is versatile enough to play as a wing-back and even in advanced positions when necessary. He has earned the U-21 call up for the Spain national youth team and could be in line for a senior cap if he continues to perform at a similar level.

Who is Sergio Gomez?

The Spaniard came through the famous La Masia youth academy before being prised away by Borussia Dortmund due to his excellent displays at the youth level. He had a two-year loan stint at Huesca before being sold to the Belgian club in 2021. Gomez has taken the league by storm since then and could become an exciting prospect in the future.

The Anderlecht youngster has made 28 appearances this season while having a whopping goal involvement of six goals and 13 assists across all competitions. He is most notably known for his attacking qualities and the number of assists he has racked up so far bears witness to that claim.

The Spanish full-back is an able player on the ball and likes to attack the wide areas of the pitch. At just 21, he is also a presence to reckon with off the ball and can be groomed into becoming one of the top left-backs in the country at a club like the Red Devils.

A left-back, however, is not a priority for us at the moment as our issues lay elsewhere. The Red Devils need to first address the instability in midfield before looking at other targets. Nevertheless, if there is leeway for us to focus on other areas, then the prospect of signing the Jupiler Pro League star would become interesting.

Fans would have hoped that following the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, Alex Telles could regain the terrific form he had shown at Porto, but that does not seem to be the case so far. In fact, he was left on the bench for the past few games, with Luke Shaw starting ahead of him.

But then again, the question arises, why do we need another left-back if a talented player like Telles is already struggling for game time? This is without considering the versatile Diogo Dalot, who can do a job at left-back if required and Brandon Williams, who is out on loan at Norwich City. Adding Gomez would be a wise decision for the future but there is no immediate need for another full-back down that side.
