Manchester United keen to sell Antony this summer

Manchester United have yet to receive any interest in much-maligned winger Antony but are keen to sell him this summer.

The Red Devils paid a whopping £86m for the Brazilian in 2022 but are already preparing to part ways with their second most expensive signing of all time.

Antony enjoyed a positive start to life at Old Trafford, scoring in his first three Premier League games, but struggled for consistency in his first season.

The second season however has been an unmitigated disaster with his goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup and his outrageous assist against Chelsea being the only highlights.

The winger has not scored a Premier League goal in over a year and has a meagre two goals and two assists in 33 matches this season in all competitions.

Antony has also found himself at the centre of controversy when it was reported he stormed away from training after being told he would not start at Bournemouth. However, the club has denied such rumours.

As a result, it has been reported that United are keen to rid themselves of the Brazilian and bring in Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise as a replacement.

Journalist Rudy Galetti has reiterated this news.

The SportItalia journalist reports, United “would like to part ways with him in the summer to repay – in part – the investment and to lighten team salaries”.

He claims that “to date” there have been no approaches for Antony but the club “hope that things will change in the coming weeks”.

The Brazilian has been linked to sides such as Barcelona in the past but it is hard to imagine how the cash-strapped Catalans would pay for the player or in fact, why they would have any interest in him.

The problem United face is that there is no realistic way they will make 50% of what they paid for him, as 25% may be more probable.

Moreover, the winger reportedly earns around £200,000 a week and has three more years on his current deal.

Therefore, if the club are serious about selling him they will need to make a massive loss on the player and hope he is interested in dropping his huge wage demands, as it is likely he will not attract Europe’s best teams.

However, United fans will be glad that it seems INEOS are being ruthless and getting rid of a player who clearly isn’t good enough for the ambitions of the club, even if it means taking a large financial hit.

This has been a problem for years under the Glazers, where players would be kept or worse, offered new contracts to maintain their value. Phil Jones and Anthony Martial spring to mind.

Hopefully INEOS can mark a new chapter and find a way to rapidly and efficiently sell the winger, so both he and the club can move on from the nightmare that was his transfer.
