As Barcelona search for ways to get rid of out-of-favour defender Sergino Dest, Manchester United could provide them with a helping hand.
According to journalist Gerard Romero, the Red Devils are in negotiations with the 21-year-old youngster over a late move to Old Trafford, with the Catalan giants keen to get rid of him.
Dest arrived at Barcelona two years ago from AFC Ajax in a move worth around €20 million. While he played regularly under then-manager Ronald Koeman, the USMNT right-back never really looked convincing enough.
Following Xavi Hernandez’s arrival last year, the defender fell down the pecking order. While he was given a chance to win over the manager during pre-season, Dest failed to capitalise on his opportunities and has been deemed surplus to requirements at Spotify Camp Nou.
Barça are already scouring the market for a replacement but have been unable to find a club for the AFC Ajax ace. Villarreal showed interest in the 21-year-old and made an approach, only to be shot down by the full-back, who will only consider leaving if a ‘great offer’ arrives.
And, Manchester United have now presented themselves as an option for Dest, with the two parties already in negotiations over a possible transfer late in the transfer window.
The Red Devils are managed by Erik ten Hag, who handed Dest his first-team debut at Ajax three years ago. So, a reunion with the Dutchman appeals to the Barcelona outcast.
However, for a move to materialise, Manchester United would first have to get rid of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has fallen behind Diogo Dalot in the order of preference at Old Trafford.
With not much time left before the transfer window slams shut, it will be interesting to see if Dest secures a transfer away from Barcelona.
