Atletico Madrid had a smooth start to their La Liga campaign on Monday night with a dominant 3-0 win over Getafe. The hero of the night was Alvaro Morata who scored twice after starting as the striker.

The Spaniard is probably Simeone’s first-choice striker for the upcoming season, especially after he delivered in his very first game back. Needless to say, this comes as bad news for Matheus Cunha.

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have held direct talks with the Brazilian’s agent in the last few days. No agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid, but it is said that Los Rojiblancos are demanding €50 million for his signing.

Given the dire situation the Red Devils are in, it would not be surprising if they agree to pay the inflated asking price too. United have lost both their opening Premier League games this season, including a 4-0 hammering to Brentford.

It remains to be seen if Cunha is open to a move to Ten Hag’s side or prefers to stay and fight for a spot under Diego Simeone. However, it would appear that the latter is a better option.

Last season, the 23-year-old made 29 league appearances for Atletico Madrid, scoring six goals and providing four assists in that duration. He was expected to be the starting number nine this season until Morata’s continuity at the club was all but official.

The Brazilian has a contract in Spain until 2026 and is under no pressure to find a new club. Moreover, there uses little doubt that Simeone trusts him and that he will see many minutes this season.
