Manchester United Held by Everton as Fernandes Demands More

United’s summer ends with frustration

Manchester United concluded their Premier League Summer Series campaign with a 2-2 draw against Everton in Atlanta, Georgia, a match that left captain Bruno Fernandes lamenting a “lazy” performance from his side. Despite lifting the tournament trophy, United’s display fell short of the standards demanded by their Portuguese talisman.

The match, staged at the impressive Mercedes-Benz Stadium, marked debuts for new arrivals Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Both attackers impressed in flashes, yet defensive frailties and lapses in concentration cost United a victory to cap their unbeaten tour.

Key moments in Georgia

Fernandes, deployed in one of the advanced No10 roles in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Amad Diallo was fouled by Everton’s James Tarkowski. Iliman Ndiaye levelled with a smart finish, only for Mason Mount to restore United’s advantage with a curling strike from range.

However, the game turned on a moment of chaos. Following a clash between Ndiaye and Fernandes, United’s focus waned. Everton capitalised, breaking away with speed before a low cross deflected in off both Ayden Heaven and Diallo, wrong-footing Altay Bayindir.

Fernandes calls for urgency in transfer business

Although United completed their US tour unbeaten, with earlier victories against West Ham and Bournemouth, Fernandes offered a sharp assessment of his side’s final outing.

“It’s been positive to be together to create a bond between the players,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “It’s been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too.

“We didn’t want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn’t the best and we were a little bit lazy today.

“We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment.”

Transfer push ahead of new season

United’s summer business has included the signings of Cunha, Mbeumo, and left wing-back Diego Leon. But Fernandes is adamant that more is needed, with the club continuing their pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

“It was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here,” Fernandes added. “More quality to get everyone to step up a little bit more, and I think that is what the club are trying to do.

“Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.”
