Manchester United have made the news off the field for a number of wrong reasons of late. It would now appear that there is also something positive that the team has been associated with off the field recently.

According to the club’s official site, the Manchester United Foundation has so far donated £50,000 to the United Kingdom Committee for UNICEF and Crowdfunder’s VaccinAid campaign. It will be made use of to support the biggest vaccine drive in history.

The donation will contribute towards UNICEF’s mission to deliver two billion COVID-19 vaccines around the world on behalf of the global COVAX Facility.

The Foundation has so far committed £1million to the COVID-19 response since the pandemic hit in March 2020. From this, £50,000 will aid the VaccinAid campaign to fund the cold chain equipment needed to deliver more than 550,000 doses of the vaccine around the world.

The cold chain refers to precisely coordinated events in temperature-controlled environments to store, manage and transport these products. Supplying these vaccines without the necessary conditions being met would be just as useless given the critical nature of the spread.

UNICEF is working with manufacturers and partners to procure two billion COVID-19 vaccine doses, as well as freight, logistics and storage. They are leading the procurement for COVID-19 vaccines to 191 countries across the world.

A long and fruitful relationship

Gordon Glick, Deputy Executive Director for Partnerships at UNICEF UK expressed his gratitude to the United Foundation for their efforts.

“By supporting UNICEF UK’s VaccinAid campaign, the Foundation is helping ensure rapid and equitable access of COVID-19 vaccines, irrespective of a country’s wealth.”

UNICEF is the leading children’s charity in the world and the Manchester United Foundation is proud to work together with them. The Foundation manages the 22-year partnership between UNICEF UK and Manchester United Football Club under the United for UNICEF brand.

The relationship is the longest-running of its kind between a sports club and global children’s organisation anywhere in the world.

It is fair to say that the COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest crisis of our era and certainly the greatest threat humanity has seen in the 21st century.

It is heartening to see United do their bit to ensure most people can emerge from this crisis unscathed. Only by working together can we make the world a better place.
