Goncalo Ramos was the star of the night when Portugal booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old started ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and netted an impressive hat-trick in Portugal’s 6-1 win over Switzerland. Fernando Santos made a big call to drop the 37-year-old to the bench, but it turned out to be right decision as he opted for more fluidity in his attack.

Ramos became the youngest man to score a hat-trick at a World Cup knock-out match after Pele.

After being linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, we can expect more speculation to hit the newspapers in the coming weeks as Erik ten Hag looks to replace Ronaldo after his contract was terminated at the club last month following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Ramos has filled in for Darwin Nunez at Benfica this season – and he could do the same for Ronaldo at United in the future.

Several United fans took to social media last night to tweet about Ramos and it sounds like they would like Ten Hag to target the Benfica striker.

Even with Ronaldo this season, United have been in dire need of a goalscorer. The Portuguese veteran wasn’t providing the goals like he did last term and ultimately left the club under a grey cloud.
