Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Leicester City on Tuesday – a result which handed Manchester City their third Premier League title in the past four seasons.

With fixtures piling up for the Red Devils, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was forced to name a youthful starting XI.

Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, Donny Van de Beek, Alex Telles and Juan Mata got a rare start.

Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga operated on the flanks as the duo made their Premier League bow.

A thundering strike from 19-year old Luke Thomas gave the lead to the visitors, but Mason Greenwood soon brought the score level.

Caglar Soyuncu aimed a powerful header past David de Gea in the 66th minute which ultimately proved to be the winning goal.

All eyes were on Donny Van ee Beek who was starting just his third league game since his arrival from Ajax last summer.

He was partnered with Nemanja Matic in a two-man midfield but failed to provide any security to the defence.

He was at fault for the first goal. Tuanzebe and Matic tried to press their respective markers.

Van de Beek should have dropped deeper to fill the gap between the two centre-backs but failed to make that call.

He didn’t create any goal-scoring chances and was guilty of losing the ball possession very easily.

Here is how fans reacted to his disappointing outing:

Fans have been urging Solskjaer to give more minutes to the Dutch international.

However, his performance concluded why the manager has been right to bench the midfielder for most of the games.

His game is better suited to the number 10 position, but with Bruno Fernandes ahead of him, he won’t be starting many games next season either.

Today’s outing raised even more questions about why the Red Devils forked out £35 million on van de Beek when they already have Paul Pogba and Fernandes as attacking midfielders.
