Manchester United have today confirmed that midfielder and club captain Katie Zelem has signed a two-year contract extension to keep her at the club until the end of the 2023/2024 season.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from Manchester United this afternoon.

The United number 10 has made 99 appearances for The Red Devils so far and has found the back of the net on 27 occasions during that time.

Zelem has been with the club ever since they reformed back in 2018, signing from Italian giants Juventus and in that time, she has gone from strength-to-strength, even forcing her way into the England set up. However, she narrowly missed out on being a part of Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses squad for the home EUROs after being included in the provisional 28-player squad.

After the disappointment of missing out on the final roster, Zelem has been given a real boost after signing her new contract with her club.

“I’m delighted to extend my contract here at United,” stated Zelem. “Being captain of this wonderful football club is a privilege and something that I am honoured to continue into another exciting season for this group of players.

“I want to thank the fans for all their support since I joined in 2018 and look forward to making more winning memories together.”

It has been a busy summer thus far for Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner who has already secured the signings of Adriana Leon, Rachel Williams and Grace Clinton ahead of the new season. Guaranteeing the services of someone as integral to the United set up as Zelem is, for at least the next two seasons, can give The Red Devils a base to build upon as they look to secure qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League this season. That being said, with the future of many more players still very much up in the air, it will take a lot more hard work if the club are to keep hold of their top stars.
