The hard work was very much done in the first half as The Red Devils netted four goals to ensure that there was no repeat of Birmingham City’s bright performance against Arsenal last weekend. The second period lacked intensity but Marc Skinner’s side saw out the game with a level of professionalism.
Birmingham City goalkeeper Emily Ramsey, who is on loan from Manchester United, saved well from Vilde Bøe Risa early on before Ella Toone’s follow up was cleared off the line.
The breakthrough was soon made by Skinner’s side when Leah Galton pulled the ball back for Katie Zelem who looped her shot over Ramsey and into the net.
Galton then got on the scoresheet herself as she slid the ball home following a deflected Alessia Russo delivery before the same player was on target again two minutes later, converting a Toone cross from the right.
Bøe Risa saw a shot saved by Ramsey before Russo’s effort from the rebound was blocked on the line as Manchester United searched for further goals. They got their reward on the stoke of half-time when Toone’s shot from range cannoned off the crossbar before the ball struck the unfortunate Ramsey and trickled over the line.
The second half lacked the same level of goalmouth action with the game as good as over. Birmingham City centre-back Quinn went close to pulling a goal back but her vicious effort rattled the crossbar while Manchester United’s first meaningful effort on goal produced a fifth goal. Substitute Hannah Blundell put a cross into the box and Russo was there to convert with a trademark header.
The result sees Manchester United temporarily jump into third position in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table while Birmingham City remain 11th.
