Manchester United are reportedly close to signing Tyrell Malacia from Eredivisie club Feyenoord.

The two clubs have agreed a £12.9 million transfer fee and the deal is subject to the left-back completing his medical.

The Dutch footballer’s arrival could see Alvaro Fernandez leaving Old Trafford on loan.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are open to sending the 19-year-old out on loan this summer.

Good decision

Fernandez is a hugely talented youngster who joined United from Real Madrid in 2020.

He was a regular starter for the Under-23 team in his debut season, netting one goal and five assists in 20 league outings.

His stats were even more impressive the following campaign as he picked up three goals and five assists in 23 league matches (via Transfermarkt).

The Dutch footballer’s performances saw him named as the club’s U23s Player of the Year.

The youngster was also rewarded by interim boss Ralf Rangnick who named him on the bench four times.

However, his first-team prospects for the upcoming season look very slim now with Malacia set to join the Manchester side from Feyenoord.

Luke Shaw is considered as the Red Devils’ current first-choice left-back but Malacia could provide him with stiff competition next season.

Alex Telles is another option who played frequently after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November last year. However, his Old Trafford future is currently uncertain and he could be sold this summer.

Brandon Williams, who spent the previous season on loan at Norwich City, can also play as a left-back for United.

Fernandez is at an age when he needs to play regular first-team football to improve his game and also boost his confidence.

He is unlikely to get regular game time at Old Trafford, so a loan move looks like the best decision for his development.
