Manchester United are eyeing a deal for Sporting Lisbon centre back Gonçalo Inácio this month.
The Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sport Witness) claims that United are preparing a loan offer for Inácio with an obligation to buy for €40 million in the summer.
While the defender’s release clause is set at €60 million, Sporting could reportedly accept a deal at the €40 million mark due to their financial situation.
The 23-year-old Portuguese international has drawn interest from Borussia Dortmund, who have reportedly contacted Inácio’s agent, Miguel Pinho, to explore a potential transfer.
Pinho, who also represents Bruno Fernandes, reportedly visited England this week to discuss with United’s representatives, leveraging his strong ties with the club.
United have been tracking the centre-back for some time, and recent developments suggest they could take decisive action in January.
Ruben Amorim knows the player well from Sporting. His close relationship with Inácio could influence the player’s final decision.
Since his return from injury last year, Lisandro Martínez has struggled to recapture his defensive solidity.
Inácio could represent a like-for-like addition, offering similar attributes to Martínez, including being left-footed—a valuable trait in modern defensive systems.
In Amorim’s preferred three-centre-back formation, depth and quality are essential, requiring at least five reliable central defenders to manage rotations across multiple competitions.
Martínez, despite recent challenges, remains a key asset with much to offer. His versatility allows him to feature in alternative roles, providing flexibility within the squad.
Adding Inácio would not only strengthen the defensive core but also integrate a player familiar with Amorim’s tactical principles, ensuring a smoother adaptation to the manager’s demands.
