Manchester United have completed the £36.5m signing of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee.

There was a £34m buyout in his clause at the Serie A club, but United decided to pay slightly more in order to spread the costs out over three years as opposed to paying it all at once.

Zirkzee, who has signed a five-year-contract, becomes Erik ten Hag’s first signing of the summer, and is the latest Dutchman to join the club in either a playing or coaching capacity.

Ruud van Nistelrooy and René Hake are freshly installed as assistant managers and Matthijs de Ligt is rumoured to be close to completing his move from Bayern Munich.

“Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club I know how exciting the future is going to be here and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United,” said Zirkzee.

“I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning; I’m ready for this next challenge, to go to another level in my career and win more trophies.

“It is a privilege to join such an iconic club. I have to take a short break now after being with the national team, but I’ll be coming back ready to make an impact straight away.”

The Dutch international, who made his debut during his side’s 2-1 win against Turkey at EURO 2024, leaves Bologna after two seasons in which he scored 14 goals in 58 appearances and helped the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

Zirkzee will provide both support and competition to Rasmus Højlund, who had been United’s only senior striker following the departure of Anthony Martial.
