He joined the Red Devils in 2006, during Sir Alex Ferguson’s managerial reign, and watched the side win five Premier Leagues, the Club World Cup and a Champions League.

Since then he has worked with five different managers, including Erik ten Hag, but is opting to leave the Reds for a new challenge.

He will be replaced by an interim doctor Dr Jim Moxon, whilst the club seek a new suitor for the permanent role. Moxon has previously worked for Liverpool and will start learning the ropes with McNally this week.

Club thanks McNally for his commitment

The club issued a statement this afternoon expressing their gratitude for his efforts at the club over the past 16 years.

United posted: “After 16 years of immense service, our club doctor, Steve McNally, is to leave Manchester United. Under his leadership, the club has been at the forefront of innovation in sports medicine & science.

We are enormously grateful to Steve & wish him every success in his new role.”

United’s Football Director John Murtough also thanked McNally in a separate post. He said: “I’d like to thank Steve for everything he has done for our players, colleagues and the wider club.

“We will continue to benefit from his legacy through the first-class medical and sports science infrastructure and team he has built.”
