Manchester United are now in the lead in the race to land Bayer Leverkusen fullback, Jeremie Frimpong.

The Red Devils have suffered defensive woes all season and have also failed to carry much threat going forward, scoring just 47 goals in 32 matches in the Premier League to date.

Diogo Dalot has actually been one of the club’s rare standout performers this season, but ever since Erik ten Hag arrived to the club, rumours of United pursuing a new right back have never really gone away.

Links to Frimpong have existed since last year when it was said that Ten Hag was keen to bring his compatriot to the club to bolster United’s wingback options.

The Dutchman has enjoyed an incredible season with Leverkusen as they won the league at a canter, are in the final of the German cup and take a two goal lead to London against West Ham in the quarter finals of the Europa League.

Frimpong himself has bagged a scarcely believable 12 goals and 11 assists, as Xabi Alonso’s system has allowed him to flourish offensively.

Naturally, European bigwigs such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City and of course, United, have been linked to the player as of late.

In fact, it was recently reported that the Red Devils had actually made contact with Leverkusen over a deal for the marauding wingback.

However, in some potentially good news for Red Devils fans, Todo Fichajes via CaughtOffside report that United are on pole to land the exciting 23 year old.

The website reports, “Manchester United are reportedly now ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal in the race for the transfer of Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong”.

“It now looks likely that Frimpong will be on the move this summer due to the €40 million release clause in his contract, with a host of top clubs looking at him at the moment”.

United could be further emboldened by the fact that Leverkusen’s transfer chief, Fernando Carro, has confirmed that his side will almost certainly have to sell one of their star players, despite their amazing season.

United were reportedly very close to sealing a deal for Frimpong in the past, so it is logical that the defender would be one of the most likely players to leave.

For a reported release clause of €40m, it would be a no brainer to pursue such a deal. Frimpong has been described as possessing “all the traits to become one of Europe’s very best full-backs” and is seen as “genuinely one of the quickest footballers in Europe”.

His style of play would also totally revitalise United’s threat down the right hand side, given his energy and endeavour.

It is without question that the Dutchman’s name will be followed closely by many clubs throughout the summer window.
