According to a report from Express, Manchester United are nearing a £44 million deal for Atalanta’s centre-back Giorgio Scalvini. United are prepared to activate Scalvini’s release clause and is reportedly in advanced talks with Atalanta for his acquisition. The promising 20-year-old has drawn interest from AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid as well.
Scalvini has had an impressive season at Atalanta, making a significant leap from the club’s academy to becoming a consistent starter in the first team. Displaying his defensive prowess, he has contributed with one goal and one assist in twenty matches across various competitions, leaving a notable mark on the team.
Within Serie A, he has been a consistent presence anchoring Atalanta’s defence, sustaining averages of 2.1 tackles, 2.1 interceptions, and 2.4 clearances per game. His passing ability is equally noteworthy, with an impressive 81.0% success rate in the highest level of Italian football, according to statistics from whoscored.

Giorgio Scalvini’s rise from Atalanta’s academy has been exceptional, solidifying a regular starting role despite his youth. Operating at the heart of the defence, his defensive prowess has attracted interest from scouts across Europe.
Man United’s interest in Scalvini is rooted in his composure under pressure. His time at Atalanta has highlighted his defensive capabilities and ability to anticipate the game, showing no hesitation in challenging situations.
Erik ten Hag, known for valuing versatile players, may view Scalvini as a promising talent. Bringing Scalvini to Old Trafford could introduce a flexible defender adept at strengthening defence and initiating attacks.
He is good enough to potentially fill the void which could be left by departures such as Raphael Varane or Harry Maguire this winter. With considerable potential for development, under ten Hag’s guidance, Scalvini could emerge as one of Europe’s premier defenders. Thus, the Man United has been prudent in pursuing his signature in the January transfer window.
