Manchester United announce pre-season games ahead of the 2021/22 season

According to the club’s official site, Manchester United have announced four pre-season games they will take part in as preparations for the 2021/22 season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaches and players will return to the Aon Training Complex to commence pre-season training next month. They will kick off their pre-season preparations with a trip to Pride Park to face club legend Wayne Rooney’s Derby County on 18 July.

A week-long UK training camp will follow in the lead-up to our next clash against another Championship side, Queens Park Rangers at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on 24th July. This will be followed by a doubleheader at home against Premier League duo Brentford on 28th July and Everton on 7th August.

Of all the clashes, it is Everton who will provide us with the sternest challenge. The scheduling of the games appears appropriate, with us set to face teams in increasing order of difficulty, at least on paper.

This should give Solskjaer and his team enough time to get the players into proper shape ahead of the season opener against Leeds United on August 14. We cannot afford to go into the game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side ill-prepared.

Home comforts

Thanks to the prevailing pandemic, the Red Devils have been forced to look locally for pre-season matches this summer. It marks a considerable difference from the usual tours that have taken us across the world.

It is fair to say that four games should be enough to get players up to speed in what could be yet another hard-fought season. Hopefully, our transfer business will also be wrapped up by then.

The number of fans able to attend Old Trafford and any away fan allocations will be informed by Government guidelines. This will be subject to review when the guidance for sports events is updated.

The Red Devils could benefit from a proper pre-season this time around. We had just one game against Aston Villa last season, thanks to the extended 2019/20 campaign. It is fair to say that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer found it a plausible excuse for our poor start to the season.

He will have no room for excuses this time around and will need to lead us to a trophy in what will be his third full season in charge. After all, what is the point of progress when it has given us nothing to show for it?
